Background Information
At the northernmost
region of the Mesoamerican
cultures, the Huastec drew upon a few influences from Teotihuacán, but did not share all their
classic culture
traits.Having once occupied northern Veracruz, they spoke a Mayan language though they developed a distinct artistic style. They are characterized by a distinguishing form of stone sculpture and unique pottery forms. The Huastec are often credited with the development of Quetzalcoatl worship who is often portrayed in Huastec attire.A specialty of the Huastec was the carving of busy, intricate designs upon ornaments of
shell. (7, 34)
