Background Information
At the northernmost region of the Mesoamerican cultures, the Huastec drew upon a few influences from Teotihuacán, but did not share all their classic culture traits.  Having once occupied northern Veracruz, they spoke a Mayan language though they developed a distinct artistic style.  They are characterized by a distinguishing form of stone sculpture and unique pottery forms.  The Huastec are often credited with the development of Quetzalcoatl worship who is often portrayed in Huastec attire.  A specialty of the Huastec was the carving of busy, intricate designs upon ornaments of shell.
